Headaches Are a Pain

Headaches affect not just the headache sufferer, but also his or her family. An estimated 45 million Americans suffer from severe, recurring attacks of migraine and tension headaches, and they spend more than $400 million each year on over-the-counter and prescription drugs in their search for permanent relief. For some, the medication works, but for many, the relief obtained is temporary at best. A cycle of headaches and medication can occur without any lasting relief. This is why many headache sufferers are taking the natural approach to combat recurring headache pain, through chiropractic care.

Recent studies link headache pain to nerve irritation. In a study conducted at the University of Maryland, researchers found a connection between muscle tension at the base of the neck and headaches. Muscle contractions can interfere with the sensitive fibers in this area that lead to the brain and spinal cord. Muscle tension is often a contributing factor to headaches. Other studies have shown that a vast majority of migraine sufferers had misalignments of the spinal vertebrae in the neck that were placing pressure on the spinal nerves.

Treating Headaches With Chiropractic

At Anderson Chiropractic, our approach for headaches is two-fold:• We remove pressure on the nerves caused by spinal misalignments.• We reduce the tension in the neck muscles to minimize nerve pressure due to tight muscles. This strategy works for headache sufferers in our office, and several studies have found it to be effective as well. A study conducted by the New Zealand government found that the majority of people who suffered from spinal misalignments had their headaches relieved or their condition improved through chiropractic care. In follow-up studies with the same patients, it was found that many were still without recurring headache pain two years later.

Of course, not all headaches can be helped with chiropractic care, but if you suffer from persistent migraine or tension headaches, you owe it to yourself to call Anderson Chiropractic for an appointment to see if we can help you. If not, we can refer you to another health care professional who can.

Back Pain Problems

Eight out of 10 Americans suffer from recurrent back pain. Back pain accounts for more workers compensation claims than any other single ailment, costing some $20 billion each year. A federal government study released in 1994 found chiropractic care to be one of the most effective methods in treating low back pain. Through chiropractic care, many people can be helped to conquer their pain and live a more active life without the need for expensive drugs and surgery.

Back Pain Causes

Most back pain results from musculoskeletal disorders – injury, neglect or misuse. Your spinal column forms a protective canal that houses the spinal cord, your body’s primary communication line. Poor posture, lack of exercise, overexertion and misuse can build up over time and force a vertebrae or disc out of place. This misalignment can put pressure on sensitive spinal nerves, interrupting the nerve flow and causing pain and other related problems.
